CARLSEN, Henning, Danish film director, born June 4, 1927 in Aalborg;  son of wholesaler Svend Julius Carlsen (died 1945) and Karen Margrethe Carlsen, born Ellermann (died 1958). Married first time 1949 to Hjordis Wirth Jensen, divorced 1969.

Married 1975 to film consultant Else Heidary, born Christensen, September 4, 1939 in Oslo. 

Joined  Minerva-Film, Copenhagen, 1948-53, mainly as assistant to the legendary Danish documentary director Theodor Christensen. Joined Nordisk Film 1953-57, working as documentary, educational and scientific film director. Film studies in Paris 1955. Manager of the Dagmar Cinema in Copenhagen 1968-81. Manager of Dagmar Film Production since 1981; Has worked as theatre and TV director.

Worked for newspapers Politiken and Information and for Danish Radio’s Culture and Public Matter Department; taught at the National Danish Film School; artistic manager for the International Film Festival in Odense 1983. Member of the board for the Danish Film Institute 1983-86. Co-founder of the Association of Danish Film Directors,1956, president 1989-90. Co-founder of the Association of Nordic Film Directors, 1989, president 1989-91. Co-founder and executive member of the European Film Academy in Berlin, 1987-1995. Co-founder of the European Film College in Ebeltoft 1989, member of the board since 1989 and chairman 1995-2000. Member of L’ARP (Société des Auteurs-Réalisateurs-Producteurs), and of S.A.C.D. (Société des Auteurs et Compositeurs Dramatiques), both in France.

He has shown films at the major international film festivals  (Cannes, Berlin, Venice + many others) and has been presented by retrospectives in Centre Pompidou, Paris, Cinémathèque Français, Paris, La Rochelle, France, British Film Institute, London, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Directors Guild of America, Los Angeles and New York, The Art Institutes of San Francisco, Chicago and Washington, The Cinematek, Oslo. Member of a great number of juries in film festivals all over Europe.

Has received a number of national and international prices.

Has written the autobiography The Repressions Of My Life (Mit Livs Fortraengninger) Gyldendal, 1998 and  Flighty Pictures (Flyvske Billeder)  Gyldendal, 2000.
